SharePoint Browser Extensions for Admins: What Each One Does

Quick answer

For SharePoint administration, and permissions above all, start with SPO Scout. It's a side panel that works on the site you have open: it shows who has access to every library, folder and file in the site with unique permissions, looks up what one person is granted there, and with Pro, cleans up sharing links and broken inheritance and, new in version 1.6, edits metadata without changing Modified, Modified By or the version.

Other SharePoint extensions focus on one area: a site-risk scan (Syskit Site Evaluation), a site explorer with query tools (SP X-Ray), shortcuts, page checks or developer consoles. If you build pages or code, a couple of them are worth installing alongside it.

SPO Scout (ours): the admin toolkit

What it does, by task:

• See who has access. The permissions report covers the whole site, down to every folder and file with unique permissions in its document libraries and lists, with the users, groups and permission levels on each. With Pro, SharePoint groups expand to their members and the report exports to PDF or CSV. (How to find unique permissions)
• Check one person. The User Permissions Report shows what someone is granted on the site and on each list and library with its own permissions, directly or through a named SharePoint group. Free.
• Clean up (Pro). Scan a library for sharing links and remove them in one step, and reset items with unique permissions back to inheriting in bulk.
• Edit metadata, keep Modified By (Pro, new in 1.6). Set column values on one item or a whole folder, with a preview for bulk runs and a CSV of what changed, while Modified, Modified By and the version stay as they were. (How it works)
• Understand storage. Library Analytics shows file types, sizes and ages, and with Pro, how much space old versions use.
• Library work. Compare columns, content types and views between libraries; with Pro, compare folders, copy pages, columns and views, recreate libraries and set version limits in bulk.

It needs no Entra ID app registration and no admin consent: it uses your own SharePoint session, so it sees only what you can see, and SharePoint data stays in your browser (security page). The panel follows your browser's language in English, German, French and Spanish.

Its listing says it scans one site for shadow users, anonymous links, external access, over-privileged accounts and "Everyone" grants. Version 1.0.2, last updated April 2026, in both stores. Free as part of the Syskit Lab, "provided as-is, without formal support".
• SP X-Ray. A side-panel site explorer; its listing describes KQL and CAML query tools, a REST tester, governance dashboards, a unique-permissions report and a user access scanner. Both stores (81 users in the Chrome Web Store).
• SPO-Assist. A popup for inspecting fields, content types, views, schema and REST endpoints, with a "Who has Access" view according to its listing. Chrome Web Store.

• SP Shortcuts (Aimery Thomas): a right-click menu of links to SharePoint settings pages.

Page quality and performance

• Page diagnostics for SharePoint (Microsoft): checks a SharePoint Online page and lists performance recommendations. The most installed extension here: 30,000 users in the Chrome Web Store and 75,000+ in Edge Add-ons.
• SharePoint Page Checker (koostoo.net): checks modern pages for broken links, accessibility, freshness, performance and spelling.

Development and formatting

• SP Editor (Tomi Tavela, PnP): a DevTools panel with PnPjs and Microsoft Graph consoles, a REST client and more. Open source (pnp/sp-editor).
• SP Formatter (Sergei Sergeev, PnP): a column, view and form formatting editor with live preview. Open source (pnp/sp-formatter).

SP Insider, which older lists still recommend, is no longer available in either store.

Why an extension, and when not

Any extension that reads SharePoint works through your own signed-in session, which shapes what the category is good for:

• Nothing to deploy. No app registration and no Global Administrator consent, which is the main practical difference from governance platforms.
• It sees what you can see. An audit needs an account with access to everything in scope.
• One site at a time. Extensions are interactive tools for the site in front of you. Tenant-wide or scheduled reporting is the job of PowerShell, Microsoft's data access governance reports or a governance platform; the permission reporting tools comparison covers those.

Before you install one in a work tenant

A browser extension running on SharePoint can read whatever your account can read. Before installing one:

1. Check the publisher, and whether the listing links to a real website, privacy policy and support contact.
2. Read the permissions it requests, and whether it runs on every site or only on SharePoint.
3. Find out where data goes. A good publisher says plainly whether SharePoint content leaves your browser. SPO Scout's answer, with every outbound request listed, is on its security page.
4. Check your organization's policy. Many organizations allow only approved extensions, so ask IT before installing on a managed browser.
