SharePoint Browser Extensions for Admins: What Each One Does

Quick answer

There is no single "SharePoint extension". Most do one job, and they fall into four groups:

• Permissions and access: SPO Scout (ours), Syskit Site Evaluation, SP X-Ray, SPO-Assist.
• Navigation and shortcuts: SharePoint Admin Shortcuts, SP Shortcuts, SharePoint Quicklinks.
• Page quality and performance: Page diagnostics for SharePoint (from Microsoft), SharePoint Page Checker.
• Development and formatting: SP Editor and SP Formatter, both open source projects in the Microsoft 365 community (PnP).

Pick by the question you need answered. An admin checking who can open a library needs something different from a developer testing a REST call or a site owner fixing a slow page.

A disclosure first: SPO Scout is our product. It is included below because it belongs in the list, and it is labelled. Everything said about the other extensions comes from their own store listings as they read on September 27, 2026; we have not reviewed them hands-on, so treat their descriptions as the publishers' own.

How this list was put together

• SharePoint-specific. General Microsoft 365 or browser tools are left out.
• Available now in the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons. SP Insider, which older lists still recommend, is no longer available in either store.
• Facts from the listing: publisher, stores, user counts as the store shows them, and what the extension says it does. Stores round user counts, so read them as rough scale, not a ranking.

Single-purpose helpers (expanding list items, hiding navigation, fixing InfoPath word wrap) exist too; they are outside the scope of this list.

Permissions and access

These answer an administrator's most common question: who can reach this site, library, folder or file, and why.

SPO Scout (ours)

A side panel that works on the SharePoint site you have open. The free plan finds every library, list, folder and file in a site (or one library) with unique permissions and shows the users and groups on each, looks up what one person is granted directly or through SharePoint groups on the site and its lists, and compares libraries. Pro adds SharePoint group expansion, export to CSV, PDF or JSON, a sharing-link scan of one library with remove-all, and bulk fixes such as resetting unique permissions. It has no Entra ID app registration: it uses your own SharePoint session, so it sees only what you can see.

Syskit Site Evaluation

From Syskit, which makes the Syskit Point governance platform. Its listing says it scans one site for shadow users, anonymous links, external access, over-privileged accounts and "Everyone" grants. Version 1.0.2, last updated in April 2026, in both the Chrome Web Store and Edge Add-ons. Syskit offers it free as part of the Syskit Lab, "provided as-is, without formal support".

SP X-Ray

A side-panel site explorer. Its listing describes KQL and CAML query tools, a REST tester, governance dashboards, a unique-permissions report and a user access scanner, as well as some write actions. Listed in both stores (81 users in the Chrome Web Store).

SPO-Assist

A popup for inspecting a site's fields, content types, views, schema and REST endpoints, with a "Who has Access" view according to its listing. Chrome Web Store; the store shows no user count.

Navigation and shortcuts

These save clicks rather than answer questions: they put the right settings page one click away.

• SharePoint Admin Shortcuts (koostoo.net). A side panel of site-level and tenant admin center links. It carries the Chrome Web Store's "Featured" badge.
• SP Shortcuts (Aimery Thomas). A right-click menu of customizable links to SharePoint settings pages.
• SharePoint Quicklinks (spfx-app.dev). Links for the current page, such as site contents, settings, permissions and SPFx debugging, plus your own links.

Page quality and performance

• Page diagnostics for SharePoint (Microsoft). Checks a SharePoint Online page and lists performance recommendations without changing anything. It is the most installed extension in this list: 30,000 users in the Chrome Web Store and 75,000+ in Edge Add-ons.
• SharePoint Page Checker (koostoo.net). Checks modern pages for broken links, accessibility, freshness, performance and spelling.

Development and formatting

• SP Editor (Tomi Tavela, PnP). A browser DevTools panel with PnPjs and Microsoft Graph consoles, a REST client, a file editor, property bags, webhooks and web part editing. Open source (pnp/sp-editor), in both stores, with about 7,000 users in each.
• SP Formatter (Sergei Sergeev, PnP). Replaces the column, view and form formatting editor with one that has live preview and validation. Open source (pnp/sp-formatter), in both stores.

What a SharePoint browser extension can and cannot do

Any extension that reads SharePoint does it through your own signed-in session. That shapes what the whole category is good for:

• It sees what you can see. Nothing more. An admin extension is only as thorough as the account running it, so an audit needs an account with access to everything in scope.
• It works on the site in front of you. Extensions are interactive tools for one site at a time. Tenant-wide or scheduled reporting is the job of PowerShell, Microsoft's data access governance reports, or a governance platform. The permission reporting tools comparison covers those options.
• It needs no app registration, usually. That is the main practical difference from platforms that ask a Global Administrator to consent to an app with tenant-wide permissions.

Before you install one in a work tenant

A browser extension running on SharePoint can read whatever your account can read. Before installing one:

1. Check the publisher and whether the listing links to a real website, privacy policy and support contact.
2. Read the permissions it requests on the store listing, and whether it runs on every site or only on SharePoint.
3. Find out where data goes. A good publisher says plainly whether SharePoint content leaves your browser. SPO Scout's answer, with every outbound request listed, is on its security page.
4. Check your organization's policy. Many organizations allow only approved extensions through Chrome or Edge management policies, so ask IT before installing on a managed browser.

Is there an official Microsoft SharePoint extension? Page diagnostics for SharePoint is published by Microsoft and checks page performance. None of the permissions or admin extensions in this list come from Microsoft.

Do Chrome Web Store extensions work in Microsoft Edge? Yes. Edge can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store once you allow extensions from other stores, and several of the extensions above are also listed in Edge Add-ons.
